Creating Websites for Visually Impaired

Creating accessible web content

Is your website accessible to people with visual impairments?

This issue was recently mentioned by one of our Wirefreesoft readers. Everyone wants access to online resources and tools. But what if a person has low vision or other physical limitations making it difficult to view a website? Having text alternatives for images, making things functional from a keyboard, using colors that have high contrast with other colors, and creating simple predictable layouts might be ways you could design more accessible content.

Recommendations for improving websites

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 is a site that lists recommendations for improving websites so they are more accessible to people with disabilities.

WebAIM web accessibility in mind, is another site that provides articles, resources, and guidance to create web content for people with disabilities.

Penn State website accessibility resources that discuss various color issues related to contrast, problematic color combinations, textured backgrounds, etc.

Accessibility 18F Guide provides checklists, resource tools, and advice about keyboard access, images, color and contrast, forms, flashing, page titles, headings, and hidden content.

Example of easily accessible web content. This Best Web Hosting Service 2017 list is considered a good example of a site that is accessible to users with visual impairment.
